The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) announced today that its Board of Directors recently approved a change to the AHAM Bylaws that will allow manufacturers of floor care appliances to join AHAM in a newly created Floor Care Division.

Several current AHAM members that also produce floor care appliances, in addition to major or portable appliances, initiated the change to AHAM's product scope. Joseph M. McGuire, AHAM President explains, "We were approached by several AHAM members that requested services related to technical product standards, similar to those we currently provide for members of our Major and Portable Appliance Divisions. This change to our product scope and organization will enable vacuum cleaner manufacturers to benefit from the value AHAM delivers in the standards arena."

The AHAM Board established a long-term plan commencing with standards and regulatory work in 2003, expanding to a full range of trade association services thereafter. Mr. McGuire continued: "The synergies among vacuum cleaner manufacturers and our current membership, including our Supplier Division, are great. Not only are there commonalities in the supply chain but also in the public policy and other issues facing manufacturers. By adding floor care appliances to AHAM's scope, we will more fully represent the home appliance industry. Our Board sees a natural evolution of this division into a full service entity within AHAM. We will work with floor care appliance manufacturers during 2003 to respond to their needs and apprise them of the benefits of AHAM membership."

The Floor Care segment of the home appliance industry includes full-size household vacuum cleaners, central vacuum systems, wet/dry vacuums, and specialty machines and is responsible for the annual production of nearly 20 million units.
