Sales of previously owned homes shot up in October by 6.1 percent to the third highest monthly level on record as house hunters scrambled to take advantage of low mortgage rates amid an uncertain economic climate. The jump pushed sales of existing homes to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.77 million, according to the National Association of Realtors. That tied with April as the third highest monthly level on record. Sales of existing homes are on track to post a record this year, the association says. (Associated Press)
