Bajaj Electricals, and Indian firm that is moving from a trading to a manufacturing company, has decided to give a major thrust to its Indian fan business. The company, which is said to hold the sixth position in the segment is aiming at capturing the fourth slot by the end of the year. Currently, Crompton Greaves is the market leader in India for fans, followed by Usha, Orient, Khaitan, and Polar. Bajaj Electricals, which has recently restructured its businesses into separate strategic business units (SBUs), has seen the fan business posting a growth of 40 percent in the past 7 months as against an
industry growth of 5 percent.

Even within the company, the fan SBU has seen the highest growth rate while Bajaj Electricals grew by 21 percent during the period. The company has embarked upon a strategy to play the volume game by bringing in fans at lower price points. "We hope to increase our market share from around 8 percent last year to 12 percent by the end of this year," according to Bajaj Electricals chairman and managing director Shekhar Bajaj.
