Sony to Target High-End of Korean Digital TV Market

Sony Corp. is gearing up its efforts to gain share in local digital TV market by focusing on wealthy Korean consumers, according to an Asia Pulse report.

Industry sources today said Sony Korea has debuted high-tech 42-in plasma display panel [PDP] TVs on the local market that will be followed by expensive 32-in liquid crystal display [LCD] TVs in the second half of this year, the report said.

Sony is also expected to introduce 50-in or larger size PDP TVs beside the 42-in models and sell larger LCD TVs, all with the next-generation display products.

The price of a 42-in PDP TV with Sony's "Vega Engine" is around 14 million won (U.S. $11,816), almost double the price of domestic products, reported Asia Pulse.

Sony plans to target wealthy people in Korea with differentiated design and top-grade resolution, the report said. The consumer electronic maker's aggressive marketing of digital TVs may intensify competition with domestic companies, such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, which are said to have a combined market share of about 80 percent.
