Samsung SDI said on Tuesday that it began production of the world's highest-resolution plasma display panels (PDPs) in terms of brightness and contrast.
The 5,000 42-in screens, which have a brightness degree of 1,000 cd/sq m and a contrast ratio of 3,000 to one, are to be produced every month by the company's plant in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province.
Samsung SDI plans to expand the volume of production depending on the market situation, replacing all the 42-in, 50-in, and 63-in screens with those equipped with newly-developed technology.
Since October last year, the company invested 1.3 billion won (U.S. $1 million) in research and development to improve screen color partition technology aimed at maximizing the effect of light emission, according to officials.
The Korean company said although it started PDP business 4 to 5 years behind Japanese rivals, it outstripped them by about 6 months in terms of technology.
The existing PDP products have a brightness degree of 700-800 cd/sq m and a contrast ratio of a maximum 1,500 to one.
Samsung SDI said the new products are already supplied to Japan's JVC, while three other Japanese and European electronics makers expressed willingness to purchase the PDP products.
The company plans to increase monthly PDP production capacity to 105,000 by January next year after combining No. 1 and 2 lines at its Cheonan plant, according to company officials. (Asia Pulse, Yonhap)
