Sanyo to Cut LCD Panel Production by 60 Percent May 27, 2003 |

Sanyo Electric Co. announced Saturday its plans to cut liquid crystal display (LCD) panel manufacturing capacity by close to 60 percent by Spring 2004 in order to shift its flat-panel display production to organic electroluminescent (OEL) display panels. OEL displays reportedly react quickly with no lingering after-image. The need for a backlight, a requirement for LCDs, is eliminated with OEL displays because the material itself glows.
The company’s LCD panels are produced at a plant run by a subsidiary, which reportedly has a line that can produce the equivalent of 380,000 13.3-in LCD panels per month and one that can produce the equivalent of 160,000 15-in panels per month.
According to the company, it intends to replace the 13.3-in LCD manufacturing line with one for circuit boards for OEL display panels. The company currently makes OEL display panels at a Japanese joint venture with Eastman Kodak Co.
