Consumer Reports reported last week on dwindling retail inventories of snowblowers in the Northeastern United States. The report said that, just after a winter storm blanketed the region with up to 15 inches of snow, some stores in the area did still have snowblowers in stock.

CR also checked with snowblower producers MTD and Toro and found that the companies did have inventory in place for re-stocking retailers.

CR writer Ed Perratore reported that—at least as of January 22—snowblowers could still be found in New York Sears, Lowe's, and Home Depot stores. He also found good inventories of two-stage, 24- to 30-inch models at Lowe's in Paterson, NJ and Orangeburg, NY.

Perratore wrote: "Two-stage models can clear snow more quickly than single-stage models because of an impeller behind the usual auger, which throws out what the auger collects. This type of snow blower also has driven wheels, which means less pushing, and wider clearing widths than you'll find in single-stage models.
