Big Gaming During the 2013 Holiday Retail Season

Sony's PS4 and Microsoft's Xbox One both launched in November. While it's difficult to say which brand is the early top seller, it's clear that game consoles will be under a significant number of trees this holiday season.

Sony Computer Entertainment launched the new PlayStation4 computer entertainment system on Nov. 15 in the United States and Canada, and the company said it sold 1 million units in the first 24 hours. By December 1, PS4 had launched in 32 markets around the world and sales had topped 2.1 million units. That included 700,000 units sold in Europe and Australasia, where it launched November 29.

The PS4 is going head-to-head with Microsoft's new game console, the Xbox One, which launched in 13 markets worldwide on November 22. Microsoft also reported more than a million units sold in the first 24 hours of the launch. Unit sales for the ensuing days have not been released--leading to speculation that sales are less than the PS4.

But Jon Brelig, writing on the InfoScout blog, said the Xbox One was the biggest-selling game console on Black Friday, with 31% of the sales at Walmart and Target stores, followed by the now-discounted Xbox 360, with 30% of sales. The discounted PlayStation3 and the new PlayStation4, each with approximately 15% of sales, were ranked third and fourth. The new Nintendo Wii U was ranked fifth, with 6% of sales, followed by the original Wii, with just 1%.

A recent report from SpilGames shows that the number of people who play electronic games will be 1.2 billion at the end of 2013--17% of the world's population. SpilGames reported that the global games market is worth $70.4 billion now, with 6% annual growth expected.
