August housing starts were up to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 891,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This is up 0.9% from July's revised estimate of 883,000, and it is up 19.0% from August 2012's rate of 749,000.
Single-family housing starts in August were at a rate of 628,000; this is 7.0% above the revised July figure of 587,000.
August starts for units in buildings with five units or more was 252,000.
August building permits were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 918,000, down 3.8% from the revised July rate of 954,000, but is up 11.0% from August 2012's 827,000.
August building permits for single-family homes were at a rate of 627,000, up 3.0% over July's revised figure of 609,000.
August permits for buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 268,000 in August.
