The top 20 semifinalists were chosen in the Electrolux Design Lab 2013 competition. The semifinalists' appliance concepts include a breathing wall that cleans the air, a hologram cooking appliance to prevent loneliness, and a robotic cleaning appliance running on kinetic energy.

The 2013 Design Lab competition calls on design students to conceptualized appliances that address the theme of Inspired Urban Living.

The semi-finalists were chosen from more than 1700 concepts from 60 countries. Two of the semi-finalists were chosen by online voting.

These semifinalists have already worked their way through several selection stages. Competitors have developed the concept and its visual details; semi-finalists' next stage is development of functionality.

"The submissions in Design Lab 2013 are surprising, thought provoking, and of high quality," said Design Director and Head of Jury Thomas Johansson. "It has been an exciting process to follow the competitors as they develop their concepts online, to give them feedback and to engage them in conversation. We have seen good ideas develop into great concepts by these talents and we are interested to see how these concepts are developed further."

Eight finalists will be chosen to compete in the final judging, which will be in Stockholm on Oct. 16, 2013, when finalists will each present their concepts to a jury of experts.

After the finalists have been selected, the student designer whose concept garners the most public votes will win the People's Choice Award and will receive a prize of EUR 1,000.

First prize will go to the student that judges believe have created a groundbreaking design solution for the future. The first prize winner will receive EUR 5000 and a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design centre.

Second prize is EUR 3,000. Third prize is EUR 2,000.
