Final Rule Published on Microwave Oven Standby Power Efficiency

On June 17, 2013, the U.S. Department of Energy published its final rule on energy standards for microwave ovens in standby mode and off mode.
Although microwave ovens are covered products under the 1975 Energy Policy and Conservation Act, no microwave oven standards have previously been put n place. The U.S. Department of Energy determined that active mode standards are unwarranted.
The ruling on microwave oven standby mode/off mode energy use was required by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, but the ruling was delayed as microwave energy efficiency testing protocols were developed.
DOE found the new energy use standards for standby mode/off mode:
* would result in significant energy savings
* are technologically feasible
* are economically justified
