The first quarter of 2013 saw stronger demand for motors, boosting the NEMA Motors Shipments Index by 18.6% (from the previous quarter) to the index's highest level ever. The 1Q 2013 increase comes after a 7.4% increase in 4Q 2012.

The index hit bottom in 2Q 2009, and has since risen a total 57%.

Fractional horsepower motors--the motors used most commonly in appliances--saw a strong market rebound in 1Q 2013. NEMA reported that the inflation-adjusted dollar value of fractional horsepower motors shipments more than doubled from 2Q 2009 and 1Q 2013.
