Metals Service Centers Shipments Lower in February

U.S. metals service center shipments of steel products in February 2013 were 3.4 million tons, down 7.9% from February 2012. Year-to-date, steel shipments in 2013 were approximately 7 million tons, down 5.0% from the first two months of 2012.

Steel product inventories at the end of February 2013 were 8.5 million tons, down 4.6% from February 2012 and down 2.6% from January 2012. This is 2.5 months of supply at the current shipping rate, up 3.5% from February 2012.

U.S. metals service center shipments of aluminum products in February 2013 were 114,300 tons, down 12.1% from February 2012. Year-to-date, aluminum shipments were 240,400 tons, down 8.8% from the first two months of 2012.

Inventories of aluminum products at the end of February 2013 were 363,100 tons, down 3.1% from February 2012 and down 0.9% from January 2013. This is 3.2 months of supply in inventory, up 10.3% from February 2012.

Canadian metals service center shipments of steel products in February 2013 were 463,100 tons of steel, down 14.5% from February 2012. Year-to-date 2013 steel shipments were 985,400 tons, down 10.6% from the first two months of 2012.

Steel product inventories were almost 1.8 million tons, up 2.4% from February 2012 and down 0.2% from January 2013. This is 3.8 months of supply, up 19.7% from February 2012.

Canadian metals service center shipments of aluminum products in February 2013 were 11,900 tons, down 11.9% from February 2012. Aluminum shipments year-to-date were 25,500 tons, down 7.4% from the same period in 2012.

Aluminum products inventories were 38,200 tons, up 9.7% from February 2012 and down 6.3% from January 2013. This is 3.2 months of supply, up 24.5% from February 2012.
