Report: Spending in Thanksgiving Week Down from 2011

Gallup's data for Thanksgiving weekend showed a large drop in spending - in fact, to 2009 levels. U.S. consumer spending was on average just $67/day in the week ending Nov. 25, 2012, which encompassed the Black Friday weekend. Gallup's data is self-reported spending in stores, restaurants, gas stations, and online. Spending in the same week in 2011 was $83; in 2010 it was $79, and in 2009 it was $69.

The research firm's data did show spending was up, however, in the week prior to Thanksgiving 2012: $74, up from $64 last year, and Gallup Chief Economist Dennis Jacobe suggested that spending before Thanksgiving week may have cut into spending the week of Black Friday.

Lower spending may also be a result of an early start to the overall season, with Thanksgiving coming earlier in 2012 than most years. Jacobe noted that consumers may end up spending more throughout the season - as consumers' own spending plans seem to indicate.

Another factor: Cyber Monday is not included in Gallup's week-of-Thanksgiving reporting; as more shopping moves from brick-and-mortar stores to online retailing, more spending could be shifting from the week of Thanksgiving to the week after.
