Consumers' plans spending on Home Appliances in the next 90 days are up in December 2012 compared to where they were in a year ago, according to BIGinsight survey data. Spending plans were also up for Computers and Lawn & Garden.
That's the good news. For the most part, the survey, conducted Dec. 4 through Dec. 10, found that consumers are a little less confident in the economy and definitely feeling more frugal than they were just a month ago.
Consumer sentiment eased in December, after reaching a five-year high in November. The survey found that 37.6% of consumers are very confident/confident in the chances for a strong economy. This percentage was down two points from 39.7% in November, but it is still the highest December reading since December of 2007, when it hit 37.0%.
The research firm characterized Black Friday and Cyber Monday as a "buying bonanza," but saw consumers become more practical again in December: 48.1% say they're now more practical in their purchasing, up from 43.0% in November. This number is above 45.8% in December 2010 and above 46.9% in December 2011.
