Study: Home Automation Interest Driven by Security Needs

Security was the top driver of consumer interest in home automation, according to a new survey of online consumers by the Consumer Electronics Association.
Of online consumers who are interested in learning more about home automation, the survey found that more than 62% cite security as their primary motivation to purchase home security.
The survey also found that 49% of consumers are familiar with home automation systems that enable them to remotely monitor and control one or more technology systems in their homes.
Rhonda Daniel, CEA manager of market research, pointed out that the more consumer know about home automation, the more likely they are to put it in their own homes. "Our industry must work together to develop clear product descriptions and educate consumers about what these technologies can do in order to increase adoption of these systems," she said.
She also noted how much room for growth the home automation industry segment has: just 1.7 million households indicate that they have a home automation system of some type installed already.
CEA research indicates safety and security features should serve as the basis for home automation packages offered today.
In the survey, more than half of consumers said they are interested in:
* receiving alerts if smoke detectors go off - 59%
* receiving alerts if someone enters or exits the home - 55%
* remotely seeing someone at the front door - 58%
* being able to adjust the lights while away - 52%
Do-it-yourself home automation products have expanded in recent years but 67% of consumers still prefer professional installation over the 27% who prefer DIY. Three-fourths of those interested in professional installation route indicated it's "very important" for the installer to be certified.
