Through a new Fisher & Paykel promotion, consumers in the United States or Canada who purchase a dishwasher, refrigerator, or washing machine will protect 20 square meters of rainforest.

Fisher & Paykel Appliances partnered with California-based environmental enterprise Cuipo for the promotion.

Cuipo is a social enterprise working to protect and preserve endangered rainforest by actually buying the land. After Cuipo purchases large parcels of rainforest land, the group transfers it to a non-profit foundation for permanent preservation.

"Our partnership with Cuipo goes far beyond our dedication and long-time commitment to create energy efficient appliances," said Scott Davies, marketing manager at Fisher & Paykel. "We have expanded on our mission to be an environmentally friendly company and taken it one step further by joining the effort against losing the precious and invaluable resource of the rainforest."

After consumers buy an F&P appliance they go to to redeem their rainforest purchase. The consumer can then see their saved meters of the rainforest on an interactive satellite map of the Cuipo reserve.

The Cuipo Rainforest Preserve is located in Chepo, Panama near the Darien National Preserve.

Cuipo has acquired 13,354,600 square meters (3,330 acres) of rainforest to put aside for preservation.
