Consumers Plan More Back-to-School Electronics

Americans' intent to buy electronics - including tablets, e-readers, and cell phones - was up 9% from the back-to-school season in 2011 to 2012, according to the latest American Express Spending and Saving Tracker. The tracker reported that 83% of Americans are doing back-to-school shopping in 2012, spending an average of $867.
With smart phones now commonplace, the report said consumers plan to spend $358 on cell phones, or more than double the $154 they said they'd spend in 2011.
"The data shows digital devices like tablets and e-readers are increasingly becoming back-to-school necessities, and not just nice-to-haves," said Claire Bennett, EVP Loyalty & Membership Benefits, American Express. "The lift in the electronics categories could bode well for many retailers."
Among the findings:
* 36% of parents expect to purchase some kind of electronics for their kids for the school season, up from 27% in the 2011 back-to-school season
* 15% expect to purchase laptops
* 15% expect to purchase scientific calculators
* 12% expect to purchase cell phones
* 9% expect to purchase tablets/e-readers
