The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that U.S. steel mills shipped 8,016,834 net tons in June 2012, a 5.0% decrease from 8,436,831 net tons in May 2012, and a 4.9% increase from 7,639,108 net tons shipped in June 2011.
Shipments year-to-date in 2012 are 50,117,104 net tons, up 11.9% from 2011 first-half shipments of 44,779,857 net tons.
Shipments in 2Q 2012 (April thru June) were 24,699,004 net tons, down 2.8% from first quarter (January thru March) shipments of 25,418,100 net tons.
The capacity utilization rate for raw steel production has also been trending down, with the week ending August 11, 2012 at 76.9% utilization compared to the 1Q utilization rate of 79.3% and the 2Q utilization rate of 78.3%.
A month-to-month comparison of shipments shows the following changes:
* hot rolled sheet: up 2%
* cold rolled sheet: down 6%
* hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip: down 13%
