What is described as a downdraft afflicting the broad economy is apparently spilling into the electrical manufacturing sector, according to industry association NEMA. The association's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions fell to 38.6 in July 2012 from 52.4 in June 2012. The index has been on the decline since reaching a high for the year of 72.5 in February.

July's reading was the first below 50 - the level indicating an equal number of panelists see conditions improving as see them deteriorating - since August 2011. The index's measure of the degree of change in current North American conditions also moved into the red, declining to -0.4 in July from a neutral 0.0 in June.

The EBCI for future North American conditions remained solidly in positive territory, climbing slightly from 57.1 in June to 61.4 in July.
