Metals Service Center Shipments Flat in June

June 2012 steel shipments from metals service centers were down roughly 2% in the U.S. and 1% in Canada from June 2011 levels, according to the Metals Service Center Institute. Aluminum shipments were down 4% in the U.S. but up 1% in Canada.

U.S. service centers shipped 3,511.2 thousand tons of steel products in June 2012, down 1.9% from June 2011. Year-to-date steel shipments were 22,089.2 thousand tons, up 5.9% from the same period in 2011. Steel product inventories were 9,020.3 thousand tons at the end of June 2012, up 13.6% over June 2011 and down 0.7% from May 2012. At the current shipping rate, this is 2.6 months of supply in inventory - up 15.9% from a year ago.

U.S. service centers shipped 128.9 thousand tons of aluminum products in June 2012, down 4.0% from June 2011. Year-to-date aluminum shipments were 793.1 thousand tons, up 3.9% from the same period in 2011. Inventories of aluminum products were 376.9 thousand tons, up 7.3% over June 2011 and down 2.3% from May 2012. This is 2.9 months of supply in inventory - up 11.9% from a year ago.

Canadian service centers shipped 531.2 thousand tons of steel products in June 2012, down 0.8% from June 2011. For 2012 year-to-date steel shipments were 3,303.4 thousand tons, up 2.0% from the same period in 2011. Steel product inventories were 1,602.8 thousand tons at the end of June 2012, up 2.8% from June 2011 and a decrease of 2.6% from May 2012. This is 3.0 months of supply in inventory, up 3.6% from a year ago.

Canadian service centers shipped 13.5 thousand tons of aluminum products were shipped in June 2012, up 1.1% from June 2011. Year-to-date aluminum shipments were 83.4 thousand tons, up 11.9% from the same period in 2011. Inventories of aluminum products were 36.7 thousand tons, up 14.6% from June 2011 and up 1.6% from May 2012. This is 2.7 months of supply in inventory, up 13.4% from June 2011.
