The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) released its Industry Profile for 2012 on Capitol Hill last week during a Congressional Steel Caucus Hearing. The Profile provides an overview of the American steel industry and highlights its commitment to sustainability. The report demonstrates steel's ubiquitous presence in America in appliance and other industries.

Appliance industry facts in the Profile:

* The recycling rate of steel in appliances is 90%.
* The percentage of steel shipments for the appliance market in 2011: 4%.

"We hope this 2012 industry profile will help everyone, from policymakers to the general public, better understand the importance of the American steel industry to our economy and our quality of life," said Thomas J. Gibson, president and CEO, AISI. "Steel is the most prevalent material in the U.S. economy supporting more than one million U.S. jobs. It is also the most recycled material, more than all other materials combined. This Profile showcases the significance of steel in maintaining our global competiveness, transportation infrastructure, sustainability, energy and national security."
