Industrial Plastics Company, owned by outdoor power equipment maker MTD, plans to close a plastic injection molding plant in Valley City, OH, according to Cleveland media outlet The Plain Dealer. The company plans to cut costs by moving the operation to an underutilized MTD plant in Leitchfield, KY.
MTD Products has its headquarters in Valley City, which is near Cleveland. The company makes lawn mowers, snow throwers, and numerous other types of residential/professional outdoor power equipment under Bolens, Yard Machines, Yard-Man, Remington, and MTD brand names.
The Plain Dealer reported that Industrial Plastics told the union in the Valley City plant of their intention to move the operation in order to save significant operational costs, unless the union could identify $3.2 million in annual cost savings at Valley City. Such cost savings were not identified, although there is some indication that union efforts to save the plant are ongoing.
The company said it will attempt to find new employment for the 140 workers affected by the closure, and will be given preference in hiring for other positions within MTD.
