Report: Consumers More Optimistic at End of 2011

Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) indexes of consumer confidence in technology and in the economy overall were up in December, and CEA said consumers are ending 2011 feeling more optimistic than they have in months.

Consumer confidence in technology reached its high for the year 2011 in December, with consumer confidence in the overall economy also showing improvement, according to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

The Index of Consumer Technology Expectations (ICTE) reached 93.6 in December 2011, making it the highest level for the index in 2011 and the second highest level since CEA began tracking the index. The previous high was in December 2010 when it reached 93.7. The ICTE was up 2 points from November 2011.

“Technology continues to be the leading category for shoppers during the holiday season and this year was no exception,” said Shawn DuBravac, CEA’s chief economist and director of research. “Looking ahead to 2012, consumer tech remains well positioned compared to all other durable good categories.”

The Index of Consumer Expectations (ICE), CEA's measure of confidence in the economy overall, reached an all-time low in November 2011 but increased 14 points in December to 170.7. The increase puts the index at its highest point since February 2011 but is still 4 points down from December 2010.

“The holiday season closed out on a strong note with consumers feeling more optimistic about the overall economy than they have in months,” said DuBravac. “While the economic landscape will remain rocky for 2012, December’s numbers show signs of hope as we head into the New Year.”
