AHRI President and CEO Stephen Yurek wrote to United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu urging that the Department of Energy (DOE) confirm its adoption of the consensus agreement AHRI reached with efficiency advocates on new minimum energy efficiency standards for residential central air-conditioners, heat pumps, and furnaces. The part of the agreement dealing with those products was included in direct final rule issued by DOE in July, but AHRI is concerned that the Department might not move quickly enough to finalize the rule when the public comment period expires October 17, 2011.

In his letter, Yurek stressed the need for DOE to provide manufacturers with adequate lead-time to comply with the amended standards given the required investment in factory tooling and product planning. The letter emphasizes AHRI’s commitment to the consensus agreement and encourages the Department to adopt it as soon as the period for public comments on the direct final rule has expired.
