Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. this month started mass-producing 22-inch transparent LCD panels. The panels are made in black-and white and in color and have a contrast ratio of 500:1 with WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) resolution.

Samsung said its LCD panel has the world’s best transparency rate of more than 20% for the black-and-white type and over 15% for the color type. Conventional LCD panels, it said, use a back light unit and have 5% transparency.

The new panel's high transparency means it can be used with ambient light instead of requiring a back light, which enables it to consume 90% less electricity compared to a conventional LCD panel using a back light unit. The panels incorporate High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) and the Universal Serial Bus (USB) interfaces.

"Transparent displays will have a wide range of use in all industry areas as an efficient tool for delivering information and communication," said Younghwan Park, a senior vice president of Samsung Electronics LCD Business.
