U.S. demand for fractional horsepower motors was higher in the fourth quarter of 2010 and pushed up the NEMA Motors Shipments Index (MSI), which grew 1.4% from the previous quarter.
Shipments were up 3.9% in 4Q 2010 compared to 4Q 2009. Inflation-adjusted shipments of fractional horsepower motors posted a large year-over-year increase while integral horsepower motors shipments declined versus 4Q 2009.
NEMA, a trade association for the electrical manufacturing industry, said motors shipments remain appreciably lower than during the 2006-2008 time period, but demand has trended higher in the past six quarters. Demand climbed nearly 14% since mid-2009.
The Motors Shipments Index is expected to show moderate gains in the next several quarters.
