BSH to Close U.S. Laundry Line, Invest in Dishwashers

BSH Home Appliances Corp. said today that it will phase out retail sales of its 27-in front load laundry products by the end of 2011 and close down one of its three production lines in New Bern, NC., U.S. - but also plans a major North American investment in its dishwasher business.

The closure of the 27-in laundry line will impact about 100 of the 730 employing at New Bern. Employees working on 27-inch laundry production line are expected to keep working until Spring.

With its exit from the 27-in laundry segment, BSH intends to turn its focus and resources to dishwashers and built-in cooking appliances in the North American market. BSH plans to invest $50 million in its dishwasher business in the next two years and plans to accelerate sales of its 24-in laundry product line in North America.

BSH Home Appliances Corp. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Munich-based BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH. The North American business is headquartered in Huntington Beach, CA and has manufacturing facilities in La Follette, TN, as well as New Bern.
