The top five U.S. home improvement-related gift purchases in the fourth quarter 2009, according to NPD, were:
• drills
• screwdrivers
• barbecue grills
• wrenches
• measuring tools

Barbecue grills and drills brought in the most dollars, NPD reported, and both gained unit and dollar share consistently over the past three years.

One-third of barbecue grill gifts in the fourth quarter of 2009 were purchased in the Southern United States. The South also accounted for 36% of hand tool and 43% of power tool gift purchases in 4Q 2009.

NPD said buyers 18-34 years old were one-third of barbecue grills and power tool gift purchasers in 4Q 2009, with hand tool purchases driven by those 54-64. Hand tool and power tool gift purchases were primarily driven by female consumers, with grills about half male, half female.

"In a challenging economy, where gifts are becoming more practical in nature, these categories are always welcome and useful gifts, whether wives splurge on gifts for their spouses, or parents are filling some gaps in their tool chest,” said Mark Delaney, director of The NPD Group’s home division.
