The shutdown of two Electrolux laundry appliance plants in Iowa, announced in late 2009, has begun in earnest with the announcement of the first phase of layoffs in Webster City. Electrolux has said that its Fabric Care Technology Center, which about 80 employees, will stay in Webster City.
Local news outlet kqradio.com reported that laundry appliance manufacturing at Webster City is scheduled to end in two phases, the first by Dec. 31, 2010 and the remainder in the first quarter of 2011. Production in the Jefferson, Iowa plant will end in January 2011.
Manufacturing will move to an Electrolux laundry appliance plant in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, across the U.S. border from El Paso, TX. Electrolux started up the Juarez plant and moved a significant portion of laundry production from Webster City to Juarez in 2006.
