The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that a capacitor in the circuitry of certain Haier brand and Black & Decker brand chest freezers can overheat, posing a fire hazard. Haier America Trading LLC, which imported the freezers, is cooperating with the CPSC in recalling the freezers. Freezer owners will get a free repair of their unit.

Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed, the CPSC stated, and said that it is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Haier America Trading imported about 67,500 of the chest freezers from China to the United States. The Black & Decker branded units sold at Wal-Mart throughout most of 2010; the Haier branded units were sold by Amazon and other retailers this year.

Haier and the CPSC received reports of 18 incidents, but not injuries have been reported.
