Evolution Robotics' Mint Automatic Floor Cleaner is now available from several web-based and catalog retailers, and will be on the shelves of U.S. retail chains later in 2010.

The Mint is a robotic appliance designed exclusively for hard surface floor cleaning. It automatically dusts and wet mops hard surface floors using cleaning cloths, such as Swiffer Dry and Wet Cloths. In addition, natural, reusable microfiber cloths ship with each unit.

NorthStar guidance technology, developed by Evolution, enables the robot to navigate and cleans a room systematically, tracking where it cleans to ensure it doesn’t miss a spot. The square body enables it to clean into corners.

The appliance adapts to different home environments using several sensors, including unique floor sensors to detect floor transitions and sensors for cleaning on slippery floors, enabling the robot to adjust the friction of the cleaning pad and maintain optimal wheel traction.

Initial retailers include, Frontgate, Hammacher Schlemmer, Home Shopping Network,, and SkyMall.

"Early customer reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, reinforcing our belief that a hard surface floor cleaner that is automatic and easy to use serves an unmet need in the market,” said Dr. Paolo Pirjanian, Evolution Robotics' CEO.

Mint nabbed a Popular Mechanics’ Editor’s Choice award for best new product at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and a silver IDEA (International Design Excellence Award) in the “Home Living” category by the Industrial Design Society of America.
