Major Appliance Shipments Up Almost 20% April

The U.S. appliance industry reported strong increases in factory unit shipments in April 2010 according to data released by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers.

In the AHAM 6 category of appliances (including washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, ranges, and ovens) shipments were up 19.7%, with 3,305,000 units shipped in April 2010 compared to 2,761,000 units shipped in April 2009.

Year-to-date, 12,360,400 appliances have been shipped in the U.S., up 9.1% from the 11,334,400 shipped during the same time frame in 2009.

The cooking appliance category has shown strong growth in shipments in 2010 with the exception of microwave ovens – until April, when microwaves showed a big jump in shipments numbers.
• Electric cooking (ranges, ovens, and cooktops) shipped 386,100 units in April 2010 for an increase of 17.7%, compared to April 2009. Year-to-date, electric cooking is up 8.4%.
• Gas cooking (ranges, ovens, and cooktops) shipments of 226,600 units were up 19.6% compared to April 2009. Year-to-date, 882,900 gas cooking appliances were shipped, up 11.6% over 2009.
• Microwave oven shipments of 768,900 were up 9.0% in April 2010 compared to April 2009. Year-to-date the category remains in the negative: 2,989,700 microwaves have shipped, down 7.4% from the number shipped during the same time period in 2009.

Home laundry shipments were up 12.9% in April 2010 compared to April 2009.
• April 2010 washer shipments were 685,200 units, up 11.1% over April 2009. That was more than enough to move year-to-date washer shipments from negative to positive. YTD shipments for washers now stand at +2.5% compared to 2009.
• Dryer shipments of 547,800 were up 15.2% in April. Dryers are up 6.1% year-to-date.

The Kitchen Clean-Up category saw growth even in most of the categories that had been negative so far in 2010.
• Dishwashers were up 15.3% in April 2010 (492,300 units shipped). Dishwasher year-to-date shipments are 1,901,100 units, up 11.5% compared to the same time period in 2009.
• Built-in dishwasher shipments of 486,100 units in April 2010 were up 15.3% compared to April 2009. YTD, built-in dishwasher shipments were 1,876,800 units, up 11.8% over 2009.
• Portable dishwasher shipments have gone through broad fluctuations month-to-month in 2010. Although April shipments of 6200 units were up 11.4% over April 2009, this niche category of appliances is still down for the year by 5.4%
• Disposers were up a modest 1.1% in April 2010, to 406,600 units. It wasn't enough to push the category into positive territory for the year so far – YTD shipments of 1,723,900 disposers are down 0.6%.
• Trash compactors spiked in March but were down again in April – the 3200 units shipped in April was 14.3% less than shipments in April 2009. 15,100 compactors have shipped YTD, down 10.8% from 2009.

The Food Preservation category showed significant increases in all categories.
• 859,400 refrigerators were shipped in April 2010, up 37.3% from April 2009. 2,795,200 refrigerators have shipped year-to-date, an increase of 18.9% over the same time period in 2009.
• 171,800 freezers (chest and upright) shipped in April 2010, up 17.8% from April 2009. That was enough to move YTD freezers shipments from negative to positive - 606,000 freezers have shipped in 2010 thus far, up 1.3% compared to the same time period in 2009.

In AHAM's Home Comfort category:
• Room air-conditioners shipments (1,438,200) were up 9.8% in April. Room air shipments for all of 2010 (3,354,700 units) are down 10.0% compared to 2009.
• Dehumidifier shipments of 286,700 units in April 2010 were down 21.8% compared to April 2009. Year-to-date, 837,900 dehumidifiers have shipped, down 9.2% compared to the same time period in 2009.
