Device Owners Embracing Entertainment and Expedience

U.S. consumers are embracing technology that offers richer entertainment experiences and simplicity, according to an NPD study that shows 64% of homes now have a flat panel TV and 11% - compared to 6% last year – have a standalone Blu-ray player.

NPD Group’s 2010 Consumer Technology Household Online Penetration Study reports that overall notebook penetration remaining flat but netbook penetration almost doubled from 4% in 2009 to 8% in 2010.

“Consumers are flocking to products that offer slim profiles and access to digital content,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis at NPD. “Devices such as Blu-ray players, netbooks, and e-readers are being used to enable rich, connected experiences.”

E-readers are now in 5% of U.S. households.

With prices down and quality improving, flash camcorders also doubled their household penetration from 5% in 2009 to 10% in 2010.

Portable navigation devices are in nearly 40% of U.S, households, up from 30% in 2009.
