HVAC Growth Seen In March Shipments

March was a good month for water heaters in the U.S., with factory shipments of gas units up 21% and shipments of electric units up 16%, according to figures just released by the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).

The number of U.S. residential gas water heaters shipped in March 2010 was 421,303 units, up 21% from the 347,852 units shipped in March 2009. Residential electric water heater shipments increased 16% to 383,318 units, compared with 331,751 units in March 2009.

Year-to-date U.S. shipments of residential gas water heaters increased 10% to 1,086,869 units, compared with 991,304 units during the same time period in 2009. U.S. shipments of residential electric water heaters increased 4% year to date to 1,006,345 units, up from 965,983 units in 2009.

Commercial gas water heaters shipments increased 4%, up from 8,119 units in March 2009 to 8,476 units in March 2010. Shipments of electric water heaters dropped 4% to 5,698 units in March 2010, down from 5,909 units in March 2009.

Year-to-date, commercial gas water heater shipments increased 3% to 21,997 units, up from 21,349 in 2009. Year-to-date U.S. shipments of commercial electric water heaters decreased 7% to 14,157 units, compared to 15,200 units in 2009.

March 2010 brought gains for both gas and oil warm air furnaces. Gas warm air furnaces shipments increased 17% to 186,963 units in March 2010, compared to 160,339 units in March 2009. Oil warm air furnace shipments increased 18% to 3,958 units, up from 3,337 units in March 2009.

Year-to-date U.S. shipments of gas warm air furnaces have increased 21% to 506,856 units, compared to 418,338 units in the same time period in 2009. Year-to-date U.S. shipments of oil warm air furnaces increased 33% to 13,319 units, compared to 9,988 units in 2009.

The combined total of U.S. factory shipments of central air-conditioners and air-source heat pumps in March 2010 was 461,446, 162,971 of which were heat pumps. That number is down 2% from the revised total of 472,958 units shipped in March 2009. The total number of heat pumps shipped increased 0.6% from a revised total of 161,966 units in March 2009.

Year-to-date U.S. shipments of heat pumps increased 7% in March 2010 to 385,717 units, compared to a revised total of 360,036 units shipped in the same time period in 2009. Year-to-date shipments of central air-conditioners increased 6% to 645,606 units, compared to a revised total of 608,751 units in 2009.
