U.S. HVAC Shipments Reported for February 2010

The number of U.S. residential gas water heater shipped in February 2010 was an increase of 3%, to 336,478 units, from the 327,591 units in February 2009, according to today's report from the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI). In the same time period, the number of U.S. residential electric water heater shipments decreased 3%, to 311,409 units, down from 321,055 units in February 2009.
Year-to-date, U.S. shipments of residential gas water heaters have increased 3%, from 643,452 units at this point in 2009 to 665,566 units in 2010. Year-to-date shipments of residential electric water heaters are down 2%, from 634,232 units shipped over the same time period in 2009 to 623,027 units in 2010.
AHRI revised its shipment numbers for January 2010:
• Shipments of residential gas water heaters in January 2010 were revised to 329,088 units (AHRI originally reported that 311,055 units were shipped).
• Shipments of total residential water heaters shipped in January 2010 was revised to 315,861 units (it had originally reported 299,488 units).
• The reported 4% increase from January 2009 to January 2010 is still accurate.
Commercial gas and electric water heaters both showed a 4% decrease in shipments in February 2010. Commercial gas water heater shipments dropped from 7,214 units in February 2009 to 6,923 units in February 2010. Commercial electric water heaters shipments dropped from 4,520 units in February 2009 to 4,339 units in February 2010.
Year-to-date shipments of commercial gas water heaters in the U.S. increased 2%, to 13,521 units, up from 13,230 units in 2009. Year-to-date shipments of commercial electric water heaters decreased 9%, to 8,459 units, compared with 9,291 units shipped by this point in 2009.
Gas and oil warm air furnaces both saw gains in February 2010. Gas warm air furnaces shipments jumped 22%, to 150,869 units in February 2010, compared with 123,629 units shipped in February 2009. Oil warm air furnaces shipments increased 8%, to 3,752 units, up from 3,465 units shipped in February 2009.
Year-to-date, U.S. shipments of gas warm air furnaces have increased 24%, to 319,893 units, compared with 257,999 units shipped by this point in 2009. U.S. shipments of oil warm air furnaces have increased 41%, to 9,361 units, compared with 6,651 units shipped by this point in 2009.
The combined total of U.S. factory shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps in February 2010 was 259,985 units, 105,836 of which were heat pumps. That total is down 4% from a revised total of 271,382 units shipped in February 2009. Shipments for heat pumps decreased 0.1% from a revised total of 105,922 units in February 2009.
Year-to-date, U.S. shipments of heat pumps increased 13% in 2010, to 222,746 units, compared with a revised total of 198,070 units in 2009. Year-to-date shipments of central air-conditioners increased 17%, to 347,131 units, compared with a revised total of 297,759 units in 2009.
