The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is making changes to its Energy Star program to address the potential for fraud and abuse, and a major component of the change is increased verification of Energy Star compliance through third party testing. Certification agency Intertek is pledging to support all stakeholders and make the transition a smooth one.

The added verification initiatives come after several high-profile conflicts with manufacturers, including appliance OEMs, who the EPA felt were using the Energy Star logo without having satisfied program standards.
