Canadian Appliance Industry Grew Modestly in 2008

The Canadian Appliance Manufacturers Association (CAMA) said that shipments of its five core white goods products grew 1.4% last year. Shipments to the retail channel reached 4.443 million for the five core products; however, the builder channel performed slightly less than expected at 624,000 for 2008.

In the report, Major Appliance Industry Trends & Facts, CAMA said that refrigerators and front load washers led the growth for 2008, with growth of 6.2% and 12.9% respectively.

Refrigerator shipments were 1.526 million in 2008, compared to 1.437 million in 2007. Gas and electric range shipments totaled 954 million, down 0.5% from 2007. Automatic washer shipments totaled 959 million, up 0.8% from the 951 shipments in 2007. Gas and electric dryer shipments totaled 868 million, up 1% from the 859 million shipped in 2007. Dishwasher shipments totaled 760 million, down 4% from the 760 million shipped in 2007.
