Combined U.S. factory shipments of central air-conditioners and air-source heat pumps for January totaled 222,419, down 32% compared with the same month a year ago, according to the Air-Conditoning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI). Heat pump shipments for January totaled 91,360, down 29% from the same month a year ago.
U.S. factory shipments of gas-fired, warm-air furnaces in January totaled 134,370, a 22% drop compared with the same month a year ago. Oil-fired, warm-air furnaces for the same month totaled 3316, a 43% drop compared with January 2008 totals.
AHRI said that residential electric water heater shipments for January totaled 313,177, an 8% drop from the same month a year ago. Residential gas water heater shipments totaled 315,861, a 1% decrease compared with shipments for the same month last year.
Commercial gas water heater shipments for January were down 16%, totaling 6,016, while commercial electric water heater shipments totaled 4,771, an 8% drop compared with the same month a year ago.
