InSinkErator Snags Technology Award

InSinkErator, a division of St. Louis-based Emerson, received the 2008 Emerson Technology Award for the development and launch of the Evolution Series of food waste disposers.

Emerson typically develops and launches about 500 major new products annually and selects one new product or technology each year to honor with the Technology Award. Seventeen products were reviewed by Emerson technology leadership in consideration for this year’s award, which is judged on:

  • Originality and creativity
  • New technology and intellectual property (patents)
  • Best-cost situation
  • Market leadership
  • Industry recognition
  • Financial return
  • Importance to division
InSinkErator, based in Racine, WI, U.S., is the world’s largest maker of garbage disposers and instant hot water dispensers. It's Evolution food waste disposers are described as the first major technological advancement in the category in more than 40 years. “The products were created…to address consumers’ two most common issues: grinding capability and noise”, said Dave MacNair, InSinkErator vice president of marketing.

The Evolution Excel model was engineered with the world’s first three-stage grinding technology, making it possible to grind virtually any kind of food without jamming or clogging. The Excel also operates 60% quieter than older technology disposers. Other models are designed to meet specific needs, such as a model to assist septic tank users, a model with an automatic cover for increased safety, and a compact model for tight spaces.
