Whirlpool has received the American Institute of Architects’ Continuing Education System Award for Excellence. The company says it is the first appliance company to win the honor.

The award recognizes educational providers for their commitment to high-quality and professional continuing education courses for architects. To focus on architects and designers in the home-building industry, Whirlpool formed the Design and Development Group, which features staff architects and helps develop courses on specifying appliances for a sustainable home.

The course includes information on the sustainable design features of appliances, and how they qualify for national "green" home certification programs, such as Energy Star.
