The U.S. Census Bureau said on Thursday, Feb. 12, that advance estimates of U.S. retail sales were up 1% in January. Despite expectations of another drop, January was the first monthly with a retail sales increase since June 2008.

These advance estimates of U.S. retail sales, released by the U.S. Commerce Department's Census Bureau, may result from anomalous data. It is expected that the report results will be called into question. The Commerce Department will release revised data on April 20, 2009.

Among the results in today's report: retail trade sales were up 1.1% (±0.7%) from December 2008.
