Hair Care, Single Serve Coffeemakers Could be Hot Christmas Gifts

According to a NPD Group/Retail Tracking Service, hair straighteners/crimpers could generate double-digit growth compared with last year’s fourth-quarter gift-giving season. About 45% all curling irons/stylers sold between May and October 2008 were straighteners, NPD said, noting that 19% of all hair straighteners sold in the six months ending October 2008 use ionic technology, compared to 14% in 2007.

In addition, in the six months ending October 2008, single-serve coffeemakers (pod or capsule) increased in unit share compared to the same time in 2007, according to NPD. With drip coffeemakers, 9- to 12-cup models still dominate the market with a 70% share. Models that contain a built-in coffee grinder are less popular this year, according to NPD, than they have been in the past two years. In addition, permanent filters have grown and currently account for almost 23% of the market, up 19% from 2007.
