A government ordinance in Japan will add clothes dryers and liquid crystal and plasma flat TVs to the list of appliances that manufacturers are legally obliged to recycle. The ordinance under the electrical appliance recycling law will take effect April 1, 2009. Consumers will be required to pay the recycling fees, set by the manufacturers, when disposing of the two products.

They join air-conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, and TVs with cathode ray tubes as recyclable items.

A minimum recycling rate of 50% has been set for flat TVs and 65% for dryers. The rate is the percentage of iron, copper, and other valuable materials manufacturers retrieve from used appliances as measured by total weight. (Kyodo News)
