James (Jim) Hurley, vice president, research and development, for Viking Range Corp., passed away in mid-January as a result of complications from leukemia. Hurley, a native of Chattanooga, TN, began his appliance industry career in 1961 with Tennessee Stove Works, which later became Modern Maid. In 1982, he became the director of research and engineering for sister company Caloric and joined Viking in 1991 as vice president – engineering. He holds nine U.S. and foreign patents for appliance-related inventions and designs, and in 1988 received the Excellence in Technology Award from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
