Sharp Corp. sued Samsung of South Korea for alleged patent violations on its liquid crystal displays, demanding damages and a halt to manufacturing and sales.

In the South Korean lawsuit, the Japanese electronics maker accused Samsung Electronics Co. of violating three LCD patents relating to technology that achieves brightness, quick response, and a wide viewing angle.

Spokeswoman Miyuki Nakayama said Sharp sued only after negotiations between the companies for a licensing agreement fell through. The company still hopes for a licensing deal, she said. (AP)
