IEC Releases Home Automation Standards

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) released a listing of new standards intending to define a home automation infrastructure, including serving applications from home and building control by way of information technologies and multimedia. The new standards are largely derived from specifications developed by KNX Association.

KNX is Brussels-based industry consortium of 100-plus home and building control companies. Its scope includes lighting, window shutters, security systems, HVAC, water control, energy management, audio/video media, and household appliances. The specifications support communication media such as twisted pair, power line, radio frequency, and Ethernet/IP, as well as different configuration modes (Automatic, Easy and System). The technology is designed for use in new and existing homes and buildings.

The new home electronic system standards are intended to help inform architects, builders, and users about how to make the smart home work from drawing board to construction for new buildings and refurbishments. With several devices interoperating over a common internal network, a system can grow into a home control system. The underlying principle is that suppliers and users can combine equipment from various sources provided it is built, installed and operated according to the same standards.
