Aga Foodservice came into 2006 with expansion plans for the U.S. In December of 2005, the United Kingdom-based appliance maker acquired Cambridge, Ontario-based premium cooker and refrigerator manufacturer Heartland Appliances.

Aga produces range cookers and refrigerators for the residential, commercial and bakery markets. Its consumer brands include Aga, Marvel Industries, Northland Kitchen Appliances, Rayburn, La Cornue, Rangemaster, Fired Earth, Grange, and Domain.

"We have a keen interest in expanding our formidable international premium appliance position here in North America, and joining forces with Heartland will only accelerate our successes," said Iain J. Whyte, president of Aga Foodservice Inc.

With the addition of Heartland, Aga saw an increased need to better organize in North America, which it did first a few weeks later. Aga reorganized into three North American entities and named Mark Whalen president of the newly formed Aga Foodservice Equipment (AFE) division, which includes Victory Refrigeration, Infinity Fryers, Stellar Steam, and Northland Refrigeration.

Iain J. Whyte remained the head of overall AGA Foodservice operations in the U.S. and Canada.

The changes also created AGA Bakery North America, a division led by Roger Faw, president of Belshaw Brothers, and will concentrate its sales efforts on retail and wholesale bakeries and on supermarkets. Adamatic and other international AGA Bakery companies will join Belshaw in the new bakery group.

The third new division is for consumer products, AGA Appliance Manufacturing, which remains under Whyte’s direct administration.

Aga was not through with its North American expansion. In September of 2006 it acquired the Amana commercial microwave business, for U.S. $49 million, from Whirlpool Corporation. Whirlpool had acquired the Amana business when it merged with Maytag. Aga will continue manufacturing the fast food restaurant microwaves in Whirlpool's Amana plant for as long as 2 years.
