Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co., Ltd. (TMD), a venture between Toshiba Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. to produce liquid-crystal displays, will spend 30 billion yen (approx. U.S. $259 million) to almost triple output to meet rising demand for screens used in mobile phones, cars and laptops. The new production line for low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) LCD panels began construction in December in the company's Ishikawa Works in central Japan, and is scheduled to be operational by October 2007.  The line will help TMD increase Ishikawa monthly production to 8.5 million LTPS LCD units (in terms of 2.2-inch panels for mobile phones) by January 2008. Combined with the company's Fukaya Works, TMD's total monthly production capacity will reach 15 million LTPS LCDs.
