The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) honored Carrier Corp. with its Best-of-the-Best Stratospheric Ozone Protection award in recognition of the company's achievements in helping restore the Earth's protective ozone layer. Carrier is a unit of United Technologies Corp.
In 1994, Carrier became the first company in the industry to phase-out CFCs from air-conditioning systems worldwide -- two years ahead of requirements in the U.S. and 16 years ahead of mandates in developing countries. IIn 1996, Carrier was first to offer non-ozone depleting commercial and residential systems. Since then, Carrier has sold approximately 3 million non- ozone depleting Puron residential systems in North America. In 2005, Carrier introduced the Evergreen 23XRV variable speed screw chiller using non-ozone depleting HFC-134a refrigerant. This commercial product was a first by Carrier, employing new technology to achieve world-class energy efficiency with zero compromise on ozone protection.
